alcohol abuse on the liver

What Happens to Your Liver From Abusing Alcohol?

Life comes unexpectedly and survival is the name of the game. As we manage ourselves like mice thru this cheese-laden maze of a rat race, it’s imperative that we take care of ourselves to keep on forward. As cliche as it can come off sometimes, you DO only live once. Every heartbreak gives us a wallop. Every injury takes its toll. Every sip we take to drown those sorrows all add up eventually. Eventually, everything breaks after so much abuse.

Addicts and alcoholics generally love to do anything in excess. We love to abuse everything in our lives. This is just the nature of the disease. Alcoholism often shows itself suddenly and rears its ugly head- just like the Big Book says. It causes us to feed the scarring decisions and scare the healing ones away.

As the scars begin to build up, many find themselves feeding into the disease. We start putting time into anything that fills the void and gives us that feeling of being whole. That’s the smoke and mirrors of it though. As we start putting our time into something to take away our pain- it’s only adding to it. Alcoholism makes the pain worse as it convinces us it’s getting better. We might think we feel better upstairs, but to what cost? We don’t see all the moving pieces as we allow ourselves to forget about the liver damage and the destruction of the mind occurring. Alcoholics only see what they want to see.

Look Out Below

Alcoholism causes alcoholics to binge drink, and binge drinking causes hangovers and/or blackouts. So what do hangovers and blackouts cause? That is the million dollar question! The problems unfolding inside such as liver damage, kidney failure, and heart issues are all going to happen whether we like it or not. Alcohol is just the acidic substance wearing away our insides while we think we’re having a whale of a time.

Alcohol works just as well as poison to an alcoholic. It helps us wake up in beds that aren’t ours. It helps us lose our purses and wallets in the strangest of places. Sometimes it puts foreign stains on our clothing that are simply unidentifiable. Who knows if they’ve even come from us- the possibilities are endless. All the while that is happening, organs are shutting down that are just trying to do their job. Kidneys, liver, the heart, the brain and more at some point will start to succumb to the liquid powers that be.

A Behind the Scenes Look

As we pour the poison down our throats, it’s thru the flesh that we see the signs of destruction. Brain and liver damage are two of the bigger components derived from these liquored engagements. Blackouts and hangovers are due to the alcohol blocking certain receptors in our brains. The beverages disrupt all sorts of communication between parts of the mind- specifically the hippocampus.

You see, the neurons being transmitted to and from the hippocampus help create memories. Blackouts will help the brain lose the ability to learn and store information practically. Then the receptors being blocked by the alcohol saturation stop the brain from creating new memories of any sort. It’s all a chain reaction that happens unbeknownst to the addicted.

The same goes for the liver damage. Unfortunately just like the brain you are only given one liver. It’s our natural filter for everything that the body consumes. Drinking too much can cause liver damage by creating an enzyme that essentially scars the liver cells upon too much consumption. These organs wear and tear on the inside just like we do on the outside. If seeing is believing, then a lot of alcoholics are in store for some unfortunate news.

The Liver and the Damage Done

Liver damage occurs so easily in alcoholics because of the contrasting behaviors at hand. The liver does everything it can to protect the body while alcohol kind of does the opposite. What happens during mass consumption of alcohol is the liver and kidneys stop being able to process it as quick as the body would like. In a domino effect, the brain is left to just kind of sit and drown in it for a little bit. The brain then just kind of shuts down and stops processing things. It’s a revolving door of sickness.

The problems with the liver begin from tacking on fatty cells as the organ struggles to do its job. From then on out, some of the issues that branch out include:

  • Fatty Liver
  • Alcoholic Hepatitis
  • Cirrhosis
  • Fibrosis

The problems just keep building from there. Ignoring alcoholism is essentially like asking for liver damage. Everybody’s bodies and minds are different, so not everybody will damage the same of course. Some will find themselves dealing with the detrimental effects much sooner than others. Some will find themselves leading a life full of imbibing with no nasty after effects at all. It really just depends. However, the chances of walking away without a scratch are usually grim if you have this disease. This disease wants liver damage, it wants pain, and it wants death. Yet it can all be avoided if we pay attention to the liver-spotted warning signs. With a little luck and a lot of action, the mind and body heal in ways that we could never imagine if we give it the chance away from alcohol.

Silence of the Lambs

Continuously letting alcohol take advantage of you can put anybody’s feathers in a ruffle. Addiction doesn’t give us a choice though. It takes on a mind of its own as it eats our liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti. history of painkillers

A Brief History on Painkillers and How They Led to the Opioid Epidemic

There’s heaviness in the air as the country sits ravished by addiction. Addiction, a disease that has had many misconceptions about it’s studied history, is now something that has become a household term. It stops for no man, woman, or child as it latches onto any healthy able mind/body that it can find. The world should consider itself lucky that it isn’t airborne.

Alcohol does its thing, crack racks up its own numbers, but painkillers open up a whole new rabbit hole to hell for the addicts of America. The United States has gotten a point where the word “opioid” is now synonymous with genocide. Pillheads, junkies, innocent addicts- however you view them, are falling by the wayside from the onslaught of painkillers flowing from the pharmaceutical companies on a day to day basis.

For too many years now, opioids of all forms have been the primary catalyst for the rise in addiction numbers. Innocent people are dying prematurely every day while the greedy drug lobbyists and CEOs of Big Pharma continue to profit off of human life. Addiction makes all this possible.

The Poppy Crew

Opiates, opioids, or painkillers (broken down into your bloodstream it’s all the same garbage), are derived from the poppy seed. This is a devilish herb that’s used can be traced back to thousands of years ago. It’s been known to have produced some strong narcotics like heroin and opium, even being used for medicinal purposes, but it was the painkiller industry that harnessed the destructive power of the tabooed plant in the forms we witness today.

The last couple hundred years brought us a new chemical force that created convenience and obsession as it pushed the old school products to the side. Painkillers arrived with the pure intent of relieving pain but quickly shifted to the pharmaceutical cash cow that we see before us. Some of these synthesized opioids included:

  • Morphine
  • Codeine
  • Methadone
  • Dilaudid
  • Percocet, Percodan, or Oxycodone
  • Demerol
  • Vicodin/Hydrocodone
  • Fentanyl

The listed painkillers above are the reasons for the overdoses we see in our neighborhoods and the reasons so many are burying their loved ones prematurely. The legalities surrounded are very questionable of course, but it doesn’t seem that this chemical entourage is going anywhere anytime soon.

Painkillers, Pain Creators

Painkillers are narcotics meant to ease physical pain but end up being used to quiet the emotional pain that most are burdened with. They are inherently abused and used incorrectly by most. Opioids in pill form like this are deeply embedded in slander and propaganda. Something that is supposed to lower pain should not be creating more. Painkillers are massively distributed across the country in quantities that greatly outnumber the numbers of citizens that actually need them. At the same time, they are prescribed with an understanding that they will help more than they will hurt. Naturally, that’s what the people selling them want you to think. Pharmaceutical company or heroin dealer, neither are going to forebode that their product will “kill you”.

Unfortunately, these pharmaceutical methods have awakened a sleeping giant in America that supersedes such problems sticking strictly to a painkiller crisis. The painkillers have manifested a full-blown opioid epidemic. Tons of people have turned to heroin in recent years due to the crackdown on painkillers while the supply/demand continues to remain ridiculously heavy. Hell, in a lot of situations you get both forms of opiate without even trying.

Much of the time heroin dealers cut their heroin with some of the more gargantuan painkillers such as Fentanyl. Cutting their heroin with Fentanyl brings about a stronger product and stretches it so that it lasts longer. In turn, this causes more overdoses and deaths. It doesn’t matter how you look at it. The point is that the epidemic is festering and painkillers continue to be the root of it time and time again.

Money, Money, Money

One of the largest threats to the addicts of America is the pharmaceutical companies- there’s no debating that.  Pharmaceutical drug lobbyists have the position to bargain with the departments like the Drug Enforcement Agency or the Food and Drug Administration. These are the government agencies put in place to protect the people, but somewhere something is being missed. How is it that painkillers can thrive in a country that the President himself has declared in a “state of emergency”? If individuals are dying at the rate they are, why is nothing being done?

It all boils down to money. Painkillers will never be stopped entirely when currency remains as an answer to questionable morals. There is a constant demand for happiness in the world and Big Pharma is quite aware. When there is a demand a supply can always be created. The bigwig pharmaceutical companies feed off of weakness and alcoholic thinking. Whether it’s painkillers, antidepressants, or anxiety medications, it all translates to cash at the end of the day.

What ends up happening much of the time is kind of a revolving door of putting money into the pockets of these companies. Patients are wrongly prescribed or over prescribed all the time. They are then cycled on different medications until the “right one” is found. By then, dependency is usually very loud and present.

This pattern eventually continues until you have somebody who is on a plethora of medications and they have absolutely no idea why they take what they do. Other times there are patients who wind up on various substances they have no business being on, or even worse there was a much more effective drug that could’ve been prescribed in the first place. Greed is a horrible excuse for addiction to flourish. We need more prevention and we need it NOW.

Pain is Pain

Whether you suffer from physical or mental pain, at the end of the day it still takes its toll. Fortunately, there are other ways to deal with pain than continuing down the opioid Trail of Tears. Addiction will make things worse while we convince ourselves everything will get better. Recovery is the only power that can make it all better. Kentucky Sues Major Drug Distributor Over Opioid Crisis In Their State

“Are you ready to die? Has life gotten to a point where you just want to feel numb all of the time? Hi, I’m McKesson. With a simple prescription of Oxycontin, you too can eliminate all of your hopes, dreams, and aspirations.” Sounds like the beginning of a menacing infomercial but not far off from reality. If only the pharmaceutical companies could make honest advertisements with not paid actors. Of course, that would be bad for business though. The hypnotism that painkillers “aid” people is a propaganda that is much more profitable.

The opioid crisis is something of catastrophic proportion that the pharmaceutical companies are only aiding and abetting. Which companies do you ask? While there’s many to name, a few of the top heavyweight contenders include Purdue Pharma, Endo Health Solutions, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and subsidiary Cephalon, Johnson & Johnson and subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan. These are the companies responsible for manifesting all the premature death that surrounds most on a regular basis. Addict or not, the crisis has gotten to a point where it’s starting to affect everybody’s life in one way or another.

With some state morgues overflowing from overdose rates and other states losing up to 8 people per day due to opioid-related death, this enigma seems unstoppable at this point. Well, a few states have finally had enough. Stepping up to the plate is Kentucky’s opioid crisis. After a chart-topping year of overdoses in 2017, the state of Kentucky has filed lawsuits against McKesson Corp- another one of the nation’s chemically driven public enemies.

Fried Chicken and Fried Brains

When we really look at the situation of addiction, it’s a rotten disease plain and simple. There’s no other way of looking at something that causes people to make one harmful decision after the next. You see, the problem with drugs is that they are too strong and are everywhere. Everybody and their mother is looking for some sort of escapism from the emotional perils of sensibility. The narcotics produced by McKesson Corp are providing escapisms to masses of people oblivious to detrimental effects. Believe it or not, Kentucky’s opioid crisis is mostly accidental. Most are unaware of the demons awakening as they shovel pill after pill down their throat.

You see, the disease of addiction ropes the individual into chemical dependency or other addictive patterns that are generally harmful to a person’s health. Yet that person won’t care. They become locked under an alcoholic obsession that only worries about itself. It takes this strong mental hold that negatively collides with most positive things in their lives.

2017 was a rough year for addiction in due to the chemical equation at hand. Outlets everywhere and more and more people were sadly looking to plug in. It’s like the moths that bash themselves against the lights at nighttime. They’re killing themselves to get to this substance that just mesmerizes them.  Kentucky’s opioid crisis only got worse throughout 2017 as too many people chased that light until their last breath. Let’s cross our fingers for 2018 because it’s safe to say we have a dilemma on our hands.

Beshear to the Rescue

Kentucky’s Attorney General Andy Beshear explains, “McKesson knowingly and intentionally distributed enormous quantities of prescription opioids throughout Kentucky with total disregard for our health and safety. This reckless behavior fueled our catastrophic drug epidemic that every community is facing.”

Beshear also brought lawsuits upon Endo Pharmaceuticals and Endo Health Solutions back in November. Like a shark out for blood. He also goes on to remark, “I’m committed to holding accountable these multi-national companies that made billions flooding our communities. Kentucky families deserve justice.” The man couldn’t be more right either. Kentucky’s opioid crisis has put a number of its counties onto the CDC’s list for those at risk of a public health crisis. A few of these counties include:

  • Floyd
  • Perry
  • Clay
  • Owsley
  • Bell

Unfortunately, the list doesn’t stop there either. While overdose number continues to rise and Kentucky’s opioid crisis continues to flourish, there’s no telling how many will eventually make it onto death’s VIP list.

The Commonwealth Commondeath

It is with great appreciation from the whole nation that Attorney General Beshear makes his moves for Kentucky’s opioid crisis, but is it enough? The irony of the whole situation is that when there is a supply there will always be a demand. Even with Trump’s address of the nation being in a state of emergency, it still seems impossible to put this ship to a halt.

The last couple years have seen a decrease in prescription opioid sales because of new laws implemented to slow everything down, but abuse stays at an all-time high. Even with eliminating all pharmaceutical tyrants, more people will turn to heroin because of its accessibility. This is the mentality that has silently fed Kentucky’s opioid crisis. Opiates play just as much a role in this, synthetic or not. Prevention is one battle, but treatment for existing addiction is another.

We are able to admit there is a problem that is taking everybody out but it is time to finally accept it. Having to accept something you don’t like can put anybody’s feathers in a ruffle. Addiction and alcoholism don’t give you a choice. They force you to take the facts as they come and there isn’t a pause button to this movie. The funding has been provided and the troops have been rallied. It’s time for people and the state to take initiative for the state of the people.

There is a Solution

Life likes to sneak up on people but addiction will grab you up by the ankles and flip your whole world upside down. From then on out it’s a constant game of catch up. However, there are alternatives to the disease running your life. Aetna Receives Awards for Great Mental Health and Wellness Apps

In today’s upbeat technologically thriving world, it seems that everybody and their mother is dependent on some form of computers. If it has a battery or plugs into the wall, chances are we use it all day every day. The smartphones specifically have taken over. None of us spend nearly as much time a day punching buttons into a microwave as we do staring at our little pocket communicators.

Whether you’re simply trolling others on the World Wide Web, watching hours of redundant YouTube videos, or secretly obsessing over somebody else’s photos on Instagram, our attention span always makes its way back to the cellular device. Bored? Great! Let’s spend the afternoon searching for videos about how starfish reproduce or when clowns first appeared in public. These are always great ways to unproductively pass the time.

Then there are categories of us who don’t have the time to waste. We do our best to avoid Facebook, Snapchat, or any other ego-driven nonsense. Believe it or not, some people focus on using their smartphones in a more advantageous manner. They are more driven than others- like the Chevy in the backyard. These are the people that read about what’s going on in the world. These are the people that are aware of smartphone apps that work on improving mental health and wellness in people. These are the people usually looking for growth- and they are the ones that will find it.

Aetna to the Rescue

There are tons of different websites, social media platforms, and phone apps to fill our time with, but Aetna takes the cake with their circuited creation. Recently the company was awarded the Innovations Award by the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions for their illustrious development on specific phone apps that focus particularly on mental illness and overall wellbeing. Aetna has produced two of these digital tools, MindCheck and SleepRate. The first of which is a tool that checks for mental illness and the latter for chronic insomnia.

These are magnificent ideas that open the doors to so many possibilities in regards to the zombified races of people staring mindlessly at an expensive piece of plastic. With Aetna’s creation of these two specific tools, the mental health and wellness app tree can be stretched into so many branches. With chronic insomnia being addressed, you would think the ideas could expand as far as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Dementia
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Autism

Certainly, there are even more mental diseases unlisted above that could reap the benefits of their app-based beginnings- that’s just the start. All these hand-eye-coordination involved apps activate different brain waves that stimulate different areas of growth. It seems abundantly clear that the possibility of channeling all this into modern medicine is already here.

Mind Games for MindCheck

Using the soon to be famous MindCheck will help many to approach mental issues that may have gone undetected or ignored for quite some time. Aetna created this simple app to help those interested to better understand the role emotional health plays in their lives. Everything this life provides us is connected- mind, body, and soul. MindCheck will help countless numbers of people to understand that mental well being is connected to physical. Looking into the introspective frequencies of our emotions, balanced or not, will shed light on a clearer reception of why we are the way we are.

MindCheck also helps to provide available resources for those that think there is an issue at hand. The beauty behind this is that the app is a helpful resource that will put a solution right into the hands of the people- it’s just a matter of whether or not they use it. Kind of like leading the horse to water and just waiting for it to drink.

Everything we do is a basic reaction to everything we observe and report. This is why there has always been chocolate and vanilla- some people are just different. So even if the horse doesn’t drink initially, at least the water is there. At least the seed has been planted for those that are looking for such. Mental stimulation is always a plus side if you can find something that sets off the spark. Some will read this or hear of Aetna’s exploits and it just may start that revelation they needed. Using these apps could very well be just what the doctor ordered.

Sleepy Time for SleepRate

As if MindCheck wasn’t already impressive enough, Aetna also has delivered SleepRate to the world of overall health and wellbeing. SleepRate is the first ever that will monitor, assess, and provide a game plan for individual sleeping patterns. Astounding! As mentioned prior, Aetna recognizes the connection between mental and physical health. Understanding that far too many people suffer from insomnia on a day to day basis with only pharmaceutical aid being offered is a problem that the digital tool aims to tackle.

The app includes a device that is worn to monitor sleeping patterns. As it does such, SleepRate will also collect data and assess the moods, thoughts, and behaviors of a person. The future is here. It’s a non-chemically binding and noninvasive way to look for a better relationship with Mr. Sandman. Better sleep, of course, means a better wake. Since it’s all connected, why not give it a shot? Some companies like Aetna are there to help us actually see another beautiful day.

APPlying Yourself

Sometimes we all lose that bit of muchness that drives us. Mental illnesses such as addiction will cause us to sell the smartphone that we could be used to test drive these wellbeing apps. Often times we wind up in active addiction and can’t seem to shake the stronghold it has. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are resources to change that. If you or a loved one is struggling with chemical dependency and are ready for help, please call 1-888-481-1993 or visit We are ready to give you any suggestions possible and set you or your loved one on a path that we can all be proud of.
