how to pick a good sober home

How to Pick a Good Halfway House

Life has so many stages, most of those having beginning and ends to them. It’s almost resemblant of the alphabet in the idea that every chapter of life begins with “A” and eventually concludes with “Z”. Sometimes that “eventually” takes longer than others, after all, not every chapter is always the same length. Some things take time for them to ruminate; maturing into a full-grown alphabet that we can appreciate and learn from.

Let’s take the example of alcoholic thinking. Alcoholism can have many pages, chapters, and sequels.  Unfortunately, it’s not the short educational nursery rhyme we are often hoping for. There’s so much misery eloped with the beginning letters of this alphabet that it’s only a matter of time until it catches up to us. Eventually, after enough problematic repetition, most alcoholics will find themselves looking for help- if fate allows them such luck. It is around here that we get close to the halfway point of our 26 letters.

It is around this halfway point that we take on early sobriety, dropping the substances by the wayside. Early sobriety takes action, fellowship, and recovery from the ways we were previously telling that alphabet. It is around this halfway point that we look into a halfway house and changing our ways so as to not go back to letter “A”. Halfway houses will provide an element Recovery requires things that we might now always find thrilling, but they will always build us up to be better persons in the end.

Almost There Living

One of the many lessons taught to those in early sobriety is to have a few options that can hold us accountable. Deciding to pack a bag and moving into a halfway house can be nerve-wracking to anybody. Most of us see sleeping in a foreign building as uncomfortable. Then to share that unfamiliar territory with strangers just adds the icing to the cake. Rest assured that it’s not at all as bad as it may seem, every letter of the alphabet is new to us at some point or another.

Living in a halfway house provides us with a simple solution to the complex problem of alcoholic thinking. The idea is to do whatever it takes to eradicate the nasty disease that consumes us. Alcoholism is never something that subsides entirely, but taking proactive measures will help prevent it from festering. It is a mental disease through and through that feeds off of lone willpower and fear.

A Sober Home is Where the Heart is

Moving into a halfway house can be understandably intimidating for anybody, but none of us are alone in that. It is vital to remember that most people in our new living facility are going through a lot of the same issues we are. Putting ourselves into a routine is something we are usually not accustomed to-  yet it makes for a healthy mind, body, and soul.

While creating our new groove and looking for a halfway house to move into temporarily, there are always things to keep in mind on the sober search. There’s are thousands of recovery residences out there across the nation so it’s best to know what we’re looking for to avoid going back to using. Some of the things a good halfway house should have included:

  • Random Urinalysis
  • Resident Rules/Boundaries
  • Curfew
  • House Meetings
  • Comradery
  • Community Meetings
  • Non-Co-ed Structure (Recommended)
  • Healthy Restrictions

As addicts, sometimes we need others to help us hold that slack in the rope so we don’t hang ourselves. Addiction’s voice does not have to be heard at all, but it will try. It is a disease that has a mind of its own. Alcoholism will attempt to barge its way back into our behaviors despite our best attempts to keep it at bay. In the beginning, we need as much help as we can get.

Recovering at Home

The idea of living in a halfway house is to be held to a certain standard while taking time to focus on ourselves. Sober livings are specifically designed for alcoholics and addicts in early recovery. So although there may be practices and things that we aren’t too keen on, they are put into play for a reason. There is a method to the madness of recovery.

Having entered recovery and seen the error of our ways through addiction, we vow to never want to go back to that unfolded misery again. However, recovery does take action. Doing this thing right means truly accepting Step 1 of AA. It means going to any lengths we can to keep to keep that sobriety- the same way we would’ve done anything we could to find euphoria. With recovery, we take that same addictive drive and concentrate to make it something that contributes to this world.

Sober Sleeping

Once we have accepted our powerlessness and unmanageability, it is here that we can make decisions that finally benefit us like moving into a halfway house. Making the choices will require things that we don’t always want to do but need to. Recovery really helps us learn to separate our wants from our needs while we continue to grow between our ears. Building this routine will create a healthy mindset where everything just starts to happen naturally. Doing the next right thing and staying away from the chemicals won’t even be a thought anymore.

Remember that when it comes to living in a halfway house- it’s not permanent. If we dive into our recovery the right way, a lot of us will be so busy we don’t even spend a lot of time at home. A halfway house is just somewhere to lay our heads at the end of the day while maintaining security for sobriety. Then once we can keep our noses clean- we move on. Seems all around like a win-win situation.

8 Comedians in Recovery

Growing up in today’s world, addiction is becoming more recognized as a serious disease. It’s nearly impossible to ignore it with the recent tabloids displaying how ferocious the opioid epidemic has become. For the longest time, most have believed that your average alcoholic was the homeless man camping out by the bridge, not your neighbor or college professor. Years ago, alcoholic thinking was something that a larger percentage of the world didn’t understand. Oh, how the times are changing.

Whether it was blissful ignorance of it or a decision to not identify it as a sickness, many addicts have paid the price for not finding or having access to help. Luckily in the 21st-century recovery from alcoholism is beginning to gain its voice. For many, sober is the new drunk. Getting your life together and abstaining from misery is finally the cool thing to do. Took long enough.

The sober community is indeed booming in recent years with many finally coming to terms with their harmful using patterns. Unfortunately, substance abuse still has its stronghold on the nation. This is why it’s so important for those representing recovery to speak up and lead the impressionable masses. Many are still unaware that there is a life out there free from the powerlessness and unmanageability that drug dependence instills in us. When celebrities and comedians in recovery take advantage of that outlet- it’s more than commendable.

Needing Laughs Instead of Tears

In the past few years, there have been a number of addiction stories in Hollywood. Sure it grabs our attention when we see Robert Downey Jr. getting a DUI or Lindsey Lohan going off to rehabilitation. Or even when Robin Williams commits suicide after battling depression and addiction for years. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the nasty side of alcoholism that is mostly shown in the media. Having more celebrities or comedians in recovery to advocate for that style of living is how less misfortune occurs.

Having a few people speak up about it on television won’t change the statistics necessarily, but even the few people that can be reached are worth it. Addiction prefers to move in silence and violence. After all, nobody knows about the fellowship until somebody points them in that direction.

Funny Sobriety

For the number of sad tales that come out of an industry of famous people, Hollywood has a slew of positive experiences that provide balance. If addiction is the evil while recovery is the good, then this is probably a yin-yang battle that will rage on forever. Many celebrities and comedians in recovery are there admittedly without shame. This promotes such a positive message to anybody watching or listening to them- even those that aren’t afflicted with alcoholic thinking.

Recovery is meant to be enjoyable. It’s a way to turn around the lives of even the most incredulous addicts to exist. A good program peppered with fun and laughter can help solidify the binding of any bit of early sobriety. Laughter truly is one of the world’s richest medicines. Fortunately for us, there are a lot of comedians in recovery that provide us with all the chuckles we can muster. Trying to remain respectful of anonymity, some of those funny actors or comedians in recovery include:

That’s just keeping it to a few of the funny people too. Any celebrities or comedians in recovery have to watch their words carefully of course so there are many that don’t speak up publicly about it too often. Alcoholics Anonymous is not meant to be promoted in such an advertising way, but at the same time, it is vital to get the message of sobriety out there. It’s quite the catch 22 that I’m sure many comedians in recovery try adhere to.

A Giggle Worthy Message

Most of the sober celebrities, especially the comedians in recovery, will, however, share the truth about the brutal disease if questioned. They might, of course, make their words funny and relatable in character, but they will drop the truth bomb despite that. There’s no point running from that deliverance if they don’t need to. Any recovering addict, regardless of your known or unknown stature, has a duty to spread that fellowship message. Those who have made it to the clean side of the road know firsthand of the difference between active and inactive alcoholic thinking.

Seriously Joking

For those that are the celebrities in recovery, becoming sober also gives them a whole bunch of new material that they can use in accordance with their chemical dependency. On top of that, they now have an entirely different demographic that they can appeal to. Some celebrities in recovery use their sobriety as an outlet to joke about the “war on drugs” and discussing political matters. Others to spice up their hopeless endeavors of active addiction in a style that has the audience stuck belly laughing for hours.

Even the people in the crowd that are unfamiliar with the demand of addiction can listen to the celebrities in recovery and appreciate their lives have never come to that point. Some of the things that the disease puts people through are just so irrational that it’s comical. Going through active addiction is a miserable process, no doubt about it, but making it to the other side of it just to laugh in its face is worth it 100%.

Choose Laughter

Nobody in their right mind wakes up one day deciding they want to be an addict. Addiction causes all laughter in life to cease. Stand up and stop yourself from becoming a lifeless victim that doesn’t know how to entertain the abominable comicals that tighten our abdominals. If you or a loved one is struggling with chemical dependency and need a drug and alcohol detox facility, please call 888-481-1993 or visit We are ready to give you any suggestions possible and set you or your loved one on a path that we can all be proud of.

books on self love

Start Loving Yourself First with These 10 Books on Self-Love

Living in an overpopulated world of people trying to coexist is just that- trying. At the very least it seems a bit too overcrowded at times. There are 7.6 billion human beings breathing, scratching, and crawling on this tiny little planet we call home. Just for reference, a billion seconds is 31.7 years of time. Equate that with the population and allow it to sink in.

With all the lonely people, there’s no question of where do they all belong. Love proves that everybody belongs- even ourselves. Our perception of reality is a reflection of ourselves that is not always in it’s truest form. We see ourselves and the world through filtered lenses.

If love is one of the answers to life, as it’s believed by many to be, where does it end? Surely there are limitations to that of which we feel the heart laced emotion. Do we love everything? We love others, sure, but do we love ourselves? This is a difficult question to dissect for most, especially in the beginning of recovery. For those that can turn to a mirror and look themselves in the eyes, that is terrific- really. However, for the other large percentage of us that struggle with such, there are books on self-love that would do unexpected wonders for anybody searching for happiness.

A little secret: It comes from within.

Love is All You Need

It’s easy to love at times, but it’s also easy to loathe. All hatred is tied to love, so when it comes to the relationship with self, this is where many of us waiver on that fine line. When looking at addiction, self-esteem or just loving self is absolutely a challenge and a half at times. Coming to terms with guilt-ridden emotions or feeling mental conflicts of interest can create fear and self-loathing for any. Using books on self-love can teach us things about ourselves that we would never think in a million years.

Understanding our emotions and relationship with self is what it all boils down to. Everything we feel, every emotion we endure, they are all thought mentally and felt physically. We think about nothing and then we feel nothing; thinking about something with context brings about dreaded feelings. When we think of something that makes us angry or joyful it can be felt inside and out. Love is one of the most powerful emotions in existence. It can create light in even the darkest of times.

love yourself first

Reading into Love

Beginning to look at our reflection and books on self-love, we must begin right at the beginning. For addicts specifically, we must commence fighting all the toxicants from our bodies so that the emotions can bamboozle us in the way our inner self-craves. Once we are ready to begin that self-therapy, we can begin to feel in ways that we thought were long gone or that of a previous life.

Some of us are ready to be selfless to ourselves and others but have a tough time figuring out just how to do so. Books on self-love help advocate for a sense of self and belonging that we never knew to exist. The best part about it is that there are hundreds of books on self-love that we could pick from- depending on what you’re looking for. Just a few of the highly recommended pieces of love-filled literature for beginners would include:

These books on self-love can teach us that life is just a matter of comprehending the emotions that begin to storm the gates of our minds and learning to process each feeling as it happens. They help spotlight the moments that we need- good, bad, and ugly.

Selfish Selflessness

Life is often about perspective, no? Some of the things that we love may bother others- and vice versa. It’s about being able to co-exist with like and unlike things. Love encompasses the idea of equality. We can show ourselves the love and support that we show others.

Reading books on self-love, we learn that the idea is emotions will sneak up on us and catch us off guard without a doubt. However, it’s all about how they’re channeled. Channeling those emotions into love and understanding is a sign of strength that any should envy. The heartbreak hotel isn’t meant to be occupied- even by yourself.

Filling Up the Cups

Those in recovery learn the tools to living in that present moment and accepting things for what they are. Not all are so fortunate to really get to understand themselves and analyze their problems like sober alcoholics and addicts do.

Many people get clean and continue to live a dirty lifestyle as they look down upon themselves. It’s truly amazing how keeping a positive outlook on love of self makes a world of difference. Every waiter must fill their pitcher in order to fill the customer’s cups, so must every individual who wishes to give back in this world. It all begins with love and it all begins from within.

Loving to Love

Loving our own selves isn’t the only obstacle we find on the road to recovery. Getting clean from chemical dependency will help us to be able to truly feel again. It takes getting clean and sober and our senses and true happiness come back to us.If you or a loved one has been struggling with getting a firm grasp on sobriety and need detoxification, please call 1-888-481-1993 or visit Our teams of specialists are waiting by to help figure out what options are best for sending your life is a comfortable direction that you can proudly stand behind.

arrested doctor fentanyl

Doctor Pleads Guilty for Taking Kickbacks for Prescribing Fentanyl Spray

Living in a world with so much uncertainty, all creatures of this planet must pick and choose their battles wisely. See, where some live to fight- others fight to live. How we prioritize what’s important to us is individualized from person to person. It’s important to know that what’s the bee’s knees for some- is worthless to others. It’s reasons like this that Neopolitan Ice Cream even exists.

With all the dissimilar personalities existing, some end up thriving off of others on their opposite sides of the ice cream tub. While some find pleasure in just love and companionship, or addicts/alcoholics find distorted purpose through substance abuse- there are those that deem finances as their generator of happiness. Whatever the weather, they end up deciding that money is their answer to everything.

For some, this style of living fills that void inside that some search their whole lives to find. It works for them. However, too much of any flavor can be anybody’s downfall. Eventually, those clinging to currency end up succumbing to greed. Greed is the little devil that works hand in hand with addiction itself. The two ideas might as well be related. Greed is what allows doctors to justify prescribing deadly prescription opiates such as fentanyl spray. Greed is an idea that always causes the addict to want more despite the ramifications. With dollar signs in their eyes, how can they see the destruction they’re enabling?

Getting Kicked for Kickbacks

With eyes on the prize, it has been proven time and time again that some people will go to any length in order to acquire more worthless paper.  A Providence, Rhode Island doctor by the name of Jerrold Rosenberg proves just case in point. Doctor Rosenberg plead guilty in a Rhode Island courtroom of receiving forms of compensation for wrongly prescribing fentanyl spray to a plethora of different patients over the course of a few years.

Jerrold was charged essentially with prescribing medications like fentanyl spray to customers in order to receive money in compensation for his wrongful diagnoses. Leading as one of the state’s largest pain management practice owners- as well as in the top for the nation, it’s amazing how long something like this can be done right in front of the noses of the American people.

This is a prime example of how corrupt the medical industry can be in these trying times for alcoholic thinking. With so many people coexisting in the United States, it would be hard to imagine a country where everybody has the same agenda. This is an example of a doctor who is probably responsible for the indirect deaths of hundreds but was able to rationalize every fentanyl spray prescription written out for the financial kickbacks being returned. At what point does human life equal more than a few zeros on a check?

Death Spray

The fentanyl spray in question is a narcotic named Subsys, which is distributed by Insys Therapeutics.  Jerrold Rosenberg is just one criminal case among several that have been brought to light by the United States justice system. This fentanyl spray, created to help cancer patients or individuals suffering through excruciating pain, is a drug that is responsible for countless overdoses over the last few years. It has been wrongly prescribed to a number of patients as part of a pharmaceutical malpractice that many innocent people could have done without.

Subsys is a drug cataloged with a conglomeration of other pharmaceutical chemicals passed out over the last few years. This fentanyl spray is a general in the battalion of opiates that are driving the opioid epidemic across the country. For those who are not that familiar with it, yes there is an epidemic affecting the country in the likes of which nobody has ever seen. Once again, with the concept of “money makes the world go around”, the pharmaceutical companies as well as doctors and business’ all have to benefit off the abusive prescribing of fentanyl spray.

Treatment Spray

Jerrold Rosenberg went so far as admitting to falsifying medical records to various insurance companies so that even government aid based programs like Medicare would fund the unnecessary fentanyl spray being passed out like hot cakes. It seems like for Doctor Rosenberg there were no limitations to malpractice and negligence in regards to the matter. Such was also the case for a slew of other MD’s across the country- as well as 5 of the former top CEOs of Insys Therapeutics who are under review for similar felony charges.

Even with this pyramid of greedy chemical tycoons dissolving there is still much to do to reverse the addiction damages manifested from the distribution of the fentanyl spray. In a world full of addicts with the odds against them, a few of the things needed to combat the epidemic sweeping the nation include:

It’s amazing how much would change with more addiction treatment services made available. The reality of the matter is that the country is slowly discovering that the “War on Drugs” is a figment of imagination created by politicians to appease the people. The drugs will never stop entering the country regardless of whatever wall is built, law is passed, or arrests or made. When there is a supply there is always a demand.
